History and Development

From its beginnings in a schoolhouse in downtown Florianópolis, the "Federal Technical School of Santa Catarina" has undergone successive and significant changes between 1986 and 2002. Part of the Federal Center of Technological Education of Santa Catarina (CEFET/SC) The Educational Unity of Florianópolis is located IN Florianópolis , the capital city of the state with an area of 49.544,15 m² , comprising a total built area of 20.416,95m². Recent changes have demanded remodeling because the institution has encompassed other educational unities, among which the following stand out: the Unity of Florianópolis, its original main office which now an educational health management in Joinville; the Unity of São José, also in Florianópolis; besides the Unities of Jaraguá do Sul and Chapecó.

Decentralization has demanded enlargement in the building to be consistent with the institution new scope. The physical space, indoors and outdoors, has been remodeled; human resources have been encouraged to achieve a higher performance level and informatics has been introduced at managerial and educational level. Research and extension programs have also been developed. Other achievements have contributed for the development of the System as a whole: the institution of elections for the chief-principal of each Unity, the creation of the Technical Federal School Foundation ( FETESC) , now INTEC (Technological Institute) besides the recent official status acknowledgement from Technical School to Federal Technological Education Center of Santa Catarina.

 

Mission and Statement

Today, CEFET/SC is one of the most renowned institutions in the state and at the same time a distinctive and distinguishing learning environment for undergraduates, graduate and post-graduate students in many scholarly and professional fields. It has promoted flexibility in the technical courses syllabus underway and has added new courses at high school level (Course for Youngsters and Adults) post-high school (Building, Electricity, Electronics, Environment, Informatics, Meteorology, Nursing); post-technical as well as undergraduate (Design, Electrical Systems, Industrial Automation, Medical Radiology) and graduate levels comprising approximately 4.262 students per year in the various levels.

The institution acknowledges its importance in the region and seeks to link its research and teaching to the vast resources of the state and country. It aims to attract a diverse faculty and student body, to support research and teaching on global issues, and to create academic relationships with many countries and regions. It expects all areas and professional fields to advance knowledge and learning at the highest level and to convey the products of its efforts to the world.
